Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd has helped break the world record for the largest synchronised taekwondo routine to raise money for a children’s charity.

The actor joined employees of professional services firm KPMG in Glasgow for the Big Blue Kick in support of Barnardo’s.

The co-ordinated martial arts display took place in locations across the UK including London, Bristol, Manchester and Leeds. It involved about 900 people.

The routine raised £50,000 for the charity and was officially verified as a new Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people participating in a co-ordinated taekwondo display at multiple venues.

On Friday May 18, Billy Boyd, Pippen in Lord of the Rings, will begin recording the second book ‘The Legend of Mordekai Hagg’ in an Edinburgh recording studio, to raise funds for children’s cancer charity – Clic Sargent.  The Legend of Mordekai Hagg is due for release in July.

The books are available for purchase in hardback/paperback at www.thetalesofmordekaihagg.com and on the Apple AppStore.  Billy Boyd will be available for interview and photo opportunity at Red Facilities, Timberbush, Edinburgh, at 5pm on Friday May 18.”

Okay, how to explain the play. It isn’t a play in the conventional sense of the word where people sit in a theatre and watch people perform on stage. Enquirer was staged on the third floor of ‘The Hub’ which was made to look like a newspaper office. When we arrived on the third floor, the actors were already in the ‘office’, pretending to be in character, writing on articles, walking up to each other’s desks, etc. My friend and I sat down at the conference table about 1 1/2m away from Billy, watching him write, getting frustrated at the text he was writing, walking over to his ‘colleagues’, etc…We were allowed to walk around the office, take a look at everything and my friend walked up to Billy’s desk and she saw that he was writing a letter to someone. Suddenly he climbed onto the conference table and the play started. He explained how a normal day in the office of a newspaper started and he was pretty much the narrator leading us through the day. The day starts with everyone reading what the other newspapers have written, so we got a scene of everyone reading newspapers, then there’s a conference, so we had a scene of all the characters sitting down at the conference table and discussing their newspaper. The audience doesn’t sit (though in some scenes you could sit on newspapers stacks, etc.) and stands right behind/around the actors watching their interactions. It was a really interesting concept and worked really, really well in that setting. I totally enjoyed following Billy everytime he did that wave with his hand that was holding the cell, indicating to us that we should follow him to the next scene.

The dialogue of the play is based on interviews with real journalists and basically the dialogue is about what newspaper journalism used to be and what it is today in light of the internet (favourite Billy quote: I don’t want you to fucking quote twitter!), in light of the phone hacking scandal with Rupert Murdoch’s newspapers, basically how journalism has changed.

It was a good, interesting play. The actors were great and I really enjoyed it! The concept of the audience walking around and following the actors to the scene worked really well and it was great fun

After the play every visitor got handed a newspaper frontpage which was basically the brochure. It had info about the play, the actors, the director, etc. and looked really cool.
